The mission of the Department of Public Works is to provide a broad range of services and infrastructure to help ensure safe and desirable communities for the people of Richland County. Areas of responsibility include engineering, floodplain management, stormwater quality, roads and drainage.
Safety - We protect the citizens and our employees from injuries and hazardous conditions.
Customer Service - We provide prompt, polite, and responsive service to all customers, internal and external.

In 1960, President John F. Kennedy proclaimed the first National Public Works Week to recognize the people who devote their professional time and energy to Public Works, making our communities better and safer places to live. The American Public Works Association has continued the tradition and this year National Public Works Week will be celebrated May 21st - May 27th with the theme “Public Works Connects Us”. Richland County will be recognizing the week with booths at the administration building on May 16th, a proclamation at the May 16th County Council meeting, participation in the American Public Works Association's Backhoe Rodeo, and an employee appreciation and service recognition events.
